What is a stigma-free zone?

A stigma-free zone is an environment where people refrain from actions that may cause harm to the emotional well-being and confidence of others, and provides a safe space where people can exist free of ridicule, harassment and bullying.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MLA JANE THORNTHWAITE – PROVINCIAL RIDING OF NORTH VANCOUVER-SEYMOUR

The riding of North Vancouver-Seymour in British Columbia has committed to becoming designated as a Stigma-Free Zone. Thank you to our Community Champion MLA Jane Thornthwaite.

The Stigma-Free Society is working with MLAs in provincial ridings, leaders in businesses/organizations, and school staff and students.

Please refer to our Stigma-Free Zone criteria and learn how to create a stigma-free zone.

You are encouraged to understand people’s differences and celebrate their diversity and individuality, which truly makes up the unique fabric of humanity.

You can be stigma-free by recognizing the trauma caused by bullying and learning about the stigmas that affect many people in society. You can create your classroom and eventually your school as a safe space where all people are accepted and understood.

This ‘stigma-free zone’ will not discriminate people on the basis of:

Age, race, mental illness, physical illness, physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, education, nationality, religion, and physical appearance.

Check out our Stigma-Free Test and gain some teachable moments along the way that encourage you to ponder on your own attitudes and beliefs around stigma.
